Dreaming is an act of pure imagination, attesting in all men a creative power, which if it were available in waking, would make every man a Dante or Shakespeare.~H.F. Hedge
Dreams are a series of mental images, ideas, thoughts, emotions, and sensations which usually occur involuntarily in the mind during REM sleep. They are both mystifying and fascinating. Dreams can expose us to internal realities that excite us, frighten us, or both.
Dreams are the stuff of the subconscious mind, and thus, can help us express and process our memories of the day, our emotions, our feelings, and other information that our conscious minds may repress or deny. In this way, dreams express our unconscious desires and mentally sort through our personal experiences and help us organize our thoughts.
A lucid dream occurs when the dreamer becomes aware that they are dreaming and can continue to dream with uninterrupted awareness. In other words, lucid dreaming is merely dreaming while being aware that you are dreaming. It is dreaming with conscious awareness. You have experienced a lucid dream whenever you realized that you were dreaming during sleep.
We are not only less reasonable and less decent in our dreams… we are also more intelligent, wiser and capable of better judgment when we are asleep than when we are awake.
Lucid dreaming can benefit you. It can help you improve your problem solving skills and develop new insights. Dreams can provide inspiration for creative endeavors. History provides us with many examples of creative works and developments inspired during sleep such as the sewing machine, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Paul McCartney’s hit song Yesterday, and the discovery of the structure of DNA. Even René Descartes claimed dreams as the inspiration for the scientific method.
Conscious dreaming is only the first step, with practice people can learn to control their dreams. Over time, one can learn to direct his or her dream experiences. This can prove beneficial in numerous ways.
To the subconscious mind, an imagined experience evokes the same response as lived experience. For this reason, dreaming about a positive or new experience can give us a chance to face our fears, improve our level of confidence, or practice new skills. Conscious dreaming is akin to a virtual reality environment in which we can learn to overcome inhibitions and develop a new way of looking at our self and environment. Let this new found ability create more positive experiences in your waking life.
